Piazza dei Ciompi market (florence flea market)

piazza dei ciompi

Situated just north of Piazza Santa Croce this is the city's flea market: Mercato delle Pulci in Italian. Here you will find objects forgotten, lost or discarded, yet don't let that put you off. From second hand furniture, kitchen implements, bric-a-brac, old postcards, photographs and books. The items found in Piazza dei Ciompi could make the perfect souvenir of the city. Quieter in the winter months, the market warms up with the seasons and is a great place for a stroll during the long summer evenings.

Open from Monday through to Saturday, the market is best on the last Sunday of the month when it overflows onto the nearby streets. Nearby are many cafes, bakeries and restaurants: the main street Via Pietrapiana is a direct route from Sant'Ambrogio to the centre of Florence and lined with small interesting shops.

The market sellers here seem to have a relaxed approach to the workaday life so don't count on that stall being open by 5pm -they may still be at lunch!
